I’m thrilled to share that Daughters of Daring: Hollywood Cowgirl Stunt Women has received a wonderful review in True West Magazine!
Reviewer and True West editor Stuart Rosebrook praised the book for shining a spotlight on the fearless women who helped build Hollywood’s Western film industry. In his review, he notes that Daughters of Daring introduces readers to the talented cowgirls, trick riders, bronc busters, and stunt performers who risked life and limb long before stunt work became regulated or widely recognized. He also applauded the extensive research and documentation that went into telling their stories.
One line from the review especially touched me:
“My hats off to Enss, I will never watch a Western again without wondering what great ‘daughter of daring’ is making the action look so easy—and dangerous at the same time.”
As a historian, there is no greater compliment than hearing that a reader will never look at history—or a Western film—the same way again.
The women featured in Daughters of Daring were pioneers. They jumped from horses onto moving trains, raced stagecoaches, performed dangerous falls, and often received little credit for their contributions. Their courage helped shape both the Western genre and the early motion picture industry, and I am honored to help bring their stories to a new generation of readers.
My sincere thanks to True West Magazine and Stuart Rosebrook for taking the time to review the book and for helping preserve and celebrate the rich history of the American West.
