1881 – Yuba County Stage from Camptonville robbed at Bridgeport where a covered wooden bridge spanned the South Fort of the Yuba River, north of Smartsville.  Wells Fargo reported express box and mail pouches taken, but losses to the express company and to mail customers were unknown.  Black Bart strikes again.

1806-Pike’s expedition makes a stockade on the upper Rio Grande in Spanish territory; he and his party are eventually taken prisoners by a Spanish force from Santa Fe, then led back to the American border.

1900-Several diseases are now epidemic among the miners and Eskimos who have descend on Nome, and most of the game in the area has been killed by hungry ‘boomers.’  Approximately 30,000 men are stranded on the beaches at Nome, of whom only a few hundred are even trying to find gold.

1889-Washington is admitted to the Union.  During the past decade the territory has developed railway connections with the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Valley.  The population has grown from almost 25,000 in 1870 t more than 350,000.  Lumbering, shipbuilding, and commercial fishing are rapidly expanding.
