1911 – “Anne of Green Gables” author Lucy Maud Montgomery (36) weds Ewen MacDonald in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

1936 – The novel “Gone with the Wind” is published Margaret Mitchell’s story set in the American South during the American Civil War became one of the United States’ biggest best-sellers. The 1939 movie version starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable was similarly successful.

June 25, 1876 – A dawn, Lt. Varnum and his Indian scouts, who are located on a high promontory called the “Crow’s Nest,” observe the Sioux camp and its large horse herds 15 miles to the west of the Little Bighorn.  They report this discovery to Custer, and note that several Sioux had been observing the cavalry column.

June 13, 1892 – New Mexico, still a territory, opens it university; Congress will later grant over 300,000 acres to support the school.

1969 – MLB legend Mickey Mantle gives his farewell retirement speech during “Mickey Mantle Day” at Yankee Stadium, 60,096 see #7 retired.

1916 – Voters in East Cleveland approves women suffrage.

1907 – Motion-picture actor John Wayne, who embodied the image of the strong, taciturn cowboy or soldier, was born in Winterset, Iowa.

1867 – Jesse James gang robs bank in Richmond, Missouri (2 die, $4,000 taken).

1883 – William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody opened Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show in Omaha, Nebraska.

1929 – 1st Academy Awards: “Wings”, Emil Jannings and Janet Gaynor win.
