This Day…

1887 – California is experiencing a flood of new immigrants that reaches its peak this year.  Passenger fares on the railroads drop from $125 a ticket to as low as a $1 in some instances.  In all, more than 200,000 people will come to California by rail.

1881 – Virgil Earp is shot on the streets of Tombstone.  He looses the use of one arm.

1864 – The family of Nicolas P. Earp arrives in San Bernardino, California.  His children include Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil.

1865 – Slavery was abolished with the 13th amendment.

1855-Within the last seven years the population of cattle in Texas was increased from 350,000 to over 1 million.

1871-Will Bill Hickok is dismissed as sheriff of Abilene, Kansas

1872 – John Henry “Doc” Holliday graduates from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery.

1866 – The first cattle drive was completed from Texas to Montana by Nelson Story.

1871 – Bill Pickett, inventor of bulldogging is two days old.  He was born in Austin, Texas.
